What are these canisters? They are hanging near the battery box on the front passenger side of the engine bay. It’s a 93 F250 with a 460.

thanks. I’ve got a broken hose on the top canister and it looks like a missing hose on the bottom. I have the hose that connects the top with the bottom. Any idea where that second hose is supposed to run off the bottom?

The carbon canister is used to capture the fuel vapors from the fuel tank. You cannot just release that fuel vapor to the atmosphere. Since the canister can be full of vapor, the purge valve is ran to suck out those vapors. So, there should be one large hose coming from the fuel tank and a least one hose going to the engine/purge valve. There could be more, but those are two that have to be there.

Typical set up on these is a hard tube on the passenger side frame rail from the fuel tanks to the engine bay, a soft hose to the vapor canister, soft hose to the purge solenoid, then soft hose to a source of manifold vacuum usually the throttle body or PCV vacuum hose. Some trucks have two canisters in series.

There are also soft hoses back at the tanks that are often never replaced.

The idea with the dual canisters is just extra capacity. So you would have the hard tube from the tanks, soft hose from the tube to the 1st canister, soft hose from the 1st canister to the 2nd canister then soft hose from the 2nd canister to the purge solenoid.

Use hose rated for fuel but no need for high pressure rating.
