I have a 1986 f-150 300 inline 4 speed manual with a NP 208 transfer case. I have had a leak from it and am looking to just go ahead and perform a complete drain and refill.
I have scoured the forums and the last post I saw on this forum was back during fall 2020 about what transfer case fluid can be used in Bullnose Fords. And there was so much back and forth, I don't think the answer was actually ever provided.
I've been searching all over and based on various sites I have found that the original specifications were to take Dexron II based on:
However this is the only place I can find it. I do not see it available locally.
Sites like advance auto recommend using 5W-30 engine oil?!
I know there is some contention amongst folks on this site but I'm just going to go by those who have a similar ride and what they use today, and hope for the best.
However, we all know Dexron II doesn't exist anymore. Further searching led me to find this:
You are making this too complicated. Dexron II does still exist, it's just been updated. All you have to do is read the bottle in the store. You have the early Dexron II, then Dexron III, and then Dexron VI.
All DEXRON-III (H) licenses expired permanently at the end of 2011, and GM now supports only DEXRON-VI fluids for use in their older automatic transmissions.[24] Aftermarket fluids asserted by their manufacturers to meet DEXRON-III(H) and earlier standards continue to be sold under names such as DEX/Merc. These fluids are not regulated or endorsed by GM.
These Dexron fluids are not backward compatible. Dexron HP, Dexron ULV, Dexron LV ATF HP. They also came out with a Dexron III in 2016 that was sepcifically made for manual transmissions. This fluid is not made for a automatic transmsision. I would think it would clearly state this on the bottle, I have never seen this fluid myself.
I'm using what the Ford dealer parts department recommended for my Borg Warner transfer case which originally called for Dexron II. I'm away from my shop at the moment but when I return I'll check the product they gave me. It's been working for 15,000 miles so far...
I'm using what the Ford dealer parts department recommended for my Borg Warner transfer case which originally called for Dexron II. I'm away from my shop at the moment but when I return I'll check the product they gave me. It's been working for 15,000 miles so far...
The above is what I recommend and use. And there are other companies that make the Dex/Merc fluid besides Valvoline.. It's what your transfer case originally had in it, with a couple of improvements to it.

Late getting back to you but the Ford Parts dept said Motorcraft Transfer Case Fluid. 1076275-00 XL-12 identifying numbers on the bottle.
, when I did mine the bottle listed it was a replacement for xl-12 I did this several years ago and no issues with the transfer case.
Used 4x4 a lot this winter actually.
