Need to change the T-case fluid and both local Ford dealers are out of Motorcraft XL12 Transfer Case fluid. My possibly dangerous assumption is that XL12 T-Case fluid is auto trans fluid with a different label for marketing/profit reasons.
Since every Ford truck I have owned that had a transfer case used auto-trans fluid, I would like to ID the transfer case manufacturer to see if I can use synthetic auto trans fluid. 99 and up Super Duty's with ESOF came with a NVG273 according to a few sources found by Google search.
Did a forum search for 20 minutes and didn't find the info. Any help appreciated! (Yes, I crawled under the truck and looked, no ID visible)
I'm no expert but I do think it's relabeled ATF. Ford is pretty generous with it's info. I do know that it started using that fluid in 2011, but it still uses LV transfluid from the previous torque shift models.. Hope that helps
I bought the "transfer case fluid" which smells and looks exactly like the Mercon ATF, but supposedly it doesn't have the detergent additives which aren't needed in a t-case application.
I'm pretty sure the current transfer case is the exact same design and casting as the ones made by New Process Gear (Magna Powertrain), just without that badging on it, just a round metal plate where the model badging used to be on past models.
(blown up) one on a 2009 F450 showing the badging.
