I played an audio for my mechanic, and he thinks the clacking sound might be the cam phasers.
Anybody here have a better theory? I looked up the cost of replacing cam phasers, and estimates are all over the place. $500-1200, or $3000-6000. I'm still waiting for my mechanic to give me a quote.
Hmm... I'd love to attach the audio to this post, but I am not able to do that. I get an error every time I try to upload it. Maybe I can attach in a comment.
Edit: Not able to add the MP3 in a comment either. Any ideas on how I can post it?

Based on the research I have done, I'm thinking this is "Spend $KK on new cam phasers, timing chain, and all the other things while you're in there."
Do I need to use OEM parts? My mechanic says the $5,400 estimate is for the Cloyes kit. That's 15 hours labor @ $180/hr + parts; tax brings it to ~$5,800. OEM Ford parts would add about $2,500.

I've read Cloyes is the one acceptable substitute for OEM.
I would probably get another estimate though .. seems high to me. You could almost get a whole new motor for that amount.

Yeah, I need to get another estimate. I had the same thought about the engine!
And, no I don't know anything about those solenoids; I will look into that.
I should mention that it does not make this noise at every start -- it is about 1 start out of every 10-20 starts.
Try unplugging the solenoids on the front of the valve covers, one at a time, while it's noisy. If the noise goes away, all you should need to replace is the solenoid... Pretty simple Job. YouTube it
Thanks... unfortunately I never know when it's going to do this, and it lasts as long as you heard -- 1-2 seconds. It's totally random.
Should I ignore it until it starts happening more frequently?
I wouldn't ignore it, but wouldn't be too worried at this point either. What weight oil are you using? If only on start-up, I wonder if a thicker weight oil would be in order...

I don’t believe it’s that simple. In that scenario, he’s just bypassing the solenoids and low oil pressure to the phasers. The engine is still getting choked of oil, otherwise. I’d recommend a check with a real pressure gauge. Quickly. Phaser clatter is usually the proverbial fat lady getting her voice ready.

If the solenoid is bad, unplugging it at idle will audibly show itself.
I have the same issue but only after the truck has been sitting for a week or longer. Loud clacking that goes away after 2 seconds. I'm guessing the motor oil has fully drained into the pan and stuff is dry until the oil pump gets oil there. For reference I have a 2013 F150 3.5 EB with 162K miles.
