I am finally ready to put my steering column in which is almost the last step in finishing the cab interior. However, I am not sure how to deal with a couple of things.
Primarily there are several items that need to slide over the shaft of the steering column such as the rubber gasket and the firewall insulating cover.
Is the collar at the top of the column presses in and can it be removed? Otherwise I don't see how to get any of those things on without taking apart the steering box and I definitely don't want to do that.
The worst case is I slice everything to fit over but that is not ideal.
Dows the shaft cover come out on the box end?
Does this collar come off so the other pieces can be slid on? Gasket that needs to slide onto the column.
The outer sleeve of the steering column will come off without taking the whole box apart, which I would agree you wouldn't want to do. If you loosen the clamp at the bottom, near the box, the outer sleeve should come loose and slip off the long steering shaft. After that, just slide your seals and such onto the sleeve and reinstall. The only thing to watch out for is the bearings and small parts at the top, and take note of how it all goes together before they end up as a pile in your lap.
You'll have to remove the floor plates that go around the column and the clutch and brake pedals. There are two sets of plates. Rubber gaskets go between them and around the pedals and column tube to better seal the holes.
Slide the column up through the tube from the bottom. Loosely attach the box to the frame. Center the column in the tube . Make sure it's not binding. You probably had to loosen or remove the U-shaped clamp that holds the tube to the dash. If you did tighten it, tighten the nuts holding the box to the frame. Don't forget part #3517 and 3518 and the spring.
Now having said all that, some say, and I think the shop manual says this, to put the steering column and box down through hole in the floor board from inside the cab. I guess if you do it this way you can keep the tube on the column.
Thanks all for the info. It slid off with a little wiggling. Although it was pretty obvious and simple I have learned the hard way....pulling on things you have never taken apart before is always a bad idea!
Once I have the interior panels in I will be ready to reinstall the steering box and column.
