You make a very good point indeed, I hadn't even thought that I could rebuild and remod anything with fairly high mileage with the 4k I save, well at least now I know what it means to be brain dead. Let me rephrase all my questions
Are Lightning's worth it? I know its really my opinion of if they do or not that is going to matter in the end, but being a poor little 16 year old (Okay, not poor, far from little, but still) I would like to know if the price, is it really worth it? I think it is personally, those are hoss machines, but ya'll are the Ford people, let me know what you think of Gen 1 Lightning's in general.
personally i would only get an 01 or newer lightning, but the gen 1's are still nice. if you can't afford anything better than the gen 1 lightning, the by all means get it if you want it. is it worth the price? thats up to you, you either want a gen 1 or not, your buds lightning isn't worth the 10k, but any other gen 1 you find for 6-7k is worth it if its what your looking for. its all up to you.
Unless that thing has extremely low miles or an aftermarket blower, I would look elsewhere for a GEN 1. If you're looking for something fast from the factory that you're not going to modify, then get a GEN 2....very nice lookin' truck with lots of power...and most used ones still have warranties. Not to take anything away from the earlier years...they are excellent cruisers/eye catchers as well.
But if you're going to buy one with plans to modify it (blower, turbo and/or nitrous), then I'd recommend a GEN 1. You can make it go faster with alot less money. One of the main reasons for this is many of the parts available for the Foxbody Mustang market (and that market is huge) are compatible with the GEN 1 Lightnings, and they respond well to these parts too. As far as the strength of the motors...there are several members of the NLOC runnin' 12's and 11's in the quater mile and many of them have well over 100k miles on the ticker using stock block, crank, pistons, cam, heads etc...runnin' boost and/or nitrous.
I personally, like the 1994 model year trucks. It was the first year that the F-150 came out with an airbag and the third brake light on the back of the cab.
'95 has bolt on brake calipers that won't rattle like earlier models. MAF conversion is available from Pro-M and a twin turbo set up is also available for the 5.8L Lightning if you wanted something different and have too much money.
That's new to me but not uncommon as I hardly know much. I do know that not all '94 have bolt on calipers. Some still had slide pins. Maybe it was F250 but definitely '94. Not something I care to argue about but I have turned down buying several '94s because I would rather buy one that would not rattle over time (at least not the brakes). I have changed a few pins and it's no big deal but why should we have to?
