1996 Bronco Lightning prototype

I remember seeing in a issue of Ford Truckin' Magazine that Ford had built two prototypes. One was actually a 2wd,and it was painted black. The other Bronco was a 4X4 with the front wheel's center hubs drilled out to allow the 4X4 hubs to poke through the 17" factory Lightning wheels. That Bronco was painted Oxford white. Both Broncos had EFI351 GT-40 Lightning engines,E4OD trannies, and 4.10:1 axle gearing. The 4X4 supposedly got a (then) prototype 6.8L Triton V-10 put into it.What happened to these two Broncos?!Does anyone within FoMoCo know of their whereabouts??? Ford actually considered building a Bronco Lightning for 1996-COOL!(They should have...)

Scrapped. All prototypes meet their maker after testing. My buddy was a calibrator for the program. I don't think the rumor of the V-10 was true.

Thanks for the info. That's ashame they scrap such vehicles.I just remember the article mentioned they had thoughts of putting a 6.8LV-10 into the 4x4 version. That wouldn't really make sense, since they knew 1996 was the final year for the Bronco, and the V-10 wouldn't see duty in a under 8,500GVW truck, anyway.A EFI7.5L(460) Bronco would've been nice.I heard one early '93(actually it was a 1992 shortbed-117"wb) Lightning prototype carried a EFI460. Something about the front weight being too much to give good handling,so the GT-40 EFI351 was created, and used, instead.Fuel economy,no doubt, also led to the 5.8L being used, rather than the 7.5L.Lets all hope FoMoCo listens and bring back the Bronco for 2003.And if they want to make the 6.8LV-10 optional for them,I'll applaud them.
