Fellas, I bought a 2015 4X4 XLT F250 about a year back. I wanted the 6.2L gasser with 4:30 gears... So, by VIN and door jam data plate info (3E) both indicated 4:30 gears. However, recently I added a dual steering stabilizer to my front end due to frequent commute on a pathetic state hwy... In doing this ... There was an axle tag that clearly indicated 3:73 ratio.. ??? WTF huh ??? Anyone seen this before ? I carfax'd the VIN before I purchased it.. It showed zero accidents ... ???? Anyone ???
It is entirely possible that a previous owner swapped axles to get better mileage, as they didn't need the 4.30's for towing - and IIRC the 4.30 axles can't support 3.73 gears, it needs a different carrier, and it ends up being cheaper to just swap the entire assembly out. A swap like that wouldn't show up on a Carfax, and MIGHT not show up in any service history since it was likely done at an aftermarket shop.
The person you would need to ask this question to would be the previous owner if you bought it private party. If you didn't, you are likely on your own.
Yeauh... My concern was an aftermarket axle swap ?? Just a few notes :
1) My RPM's at hwy speeds are lower than my 19' f250 powerstroke w/ 3:55's was ... .both 6 spd autos
2) I have used 4X4 numerous times without any issues .. works perfect ...
3) My door plate code and VIN codes indicate I have a "limited slip" rear axle... however, I've hung one tire off the road to see if they would lock up .. no lock up !
4) That's the sweetest excursion I think I seen...way legit... very nice stance and balance ..
I ordered my 2015 F250 specifically with the 4.30 gears paired with the 6.2 for towing an 8,000 pound fifth wheel. I also ordered the electronic locking rear differential. My door tag shows an axle code of 4M for the 4.30 gears with the electronic locker.
