My 1940 1-1/2 ton 4-speed slipped out of 3rd when I bought it. A mechanic swapped in the gearset from a spare tranny and installed new bearings, etc. to solve it. 3rd gear was bad.
UPDATE: The pin that inserts through the threads for the cap on the shifter and engages into a slot on the shaft was worn so that it was tapered and too short, so the shifter was not properly held in place. A new one was made, and three new detent springs were installed - should be good for another 75 years! Huge thanks to Anthony, of Coachcraft (Fillmore, CA) who had it diagnosed over the phone and had it fixed in a few days.
