Got a 1980 F250 Ranger, and I do not have an ashtray “courtesy” light, and a buddy of mine has a 1981 F250 Custom with a “courtesy” light for the ashtray, and I was wondering if it would be possible to swap ashtray’s, but I could keep the plastic part on it. Basically is there any way I could integrate that courtesy light onto my ashtray?
I dont see why not but you may not need to swap the whole unit as the light socket may be just a add on.
The big question is "where dose it plug into the harness"?
Only real way to know is to pull both and give a look see if just a socket or full tray swap and if there is a loose plug to plug it in.
BTW I dont remember a light or a loose plug on either of my 81 F100's, a Custom & Ranger.
Then again I was not looking for a loose plug so who knows?
BTW II the truck with the light dose it have under dash lighting?
Neither of mine do but see posts the plugs are there so if you can get the lights you just plug them in.
I also wonder if that is why 1 truck has the tray light and the other dose not?
Good luck

They did have a lighting package upgrade for the interiors, and this also included the underhood light and a map light/domelight assembly and a rear cargo light. All this requires extra wiring. Not sure all trucks have that wiring. With the package in addition to the domelight behind your head on the roof, you would also have lights under the dash on either side near each kickpanel that would come on when the door was opened.
Well, the Ranger parts truck did not have a light in the glove box or ash tray, and I know because the full wiring from that truck went into my custom, both were 1981 trucks.
Neither truck had under dash / kick panel lights or the map light but did have the dome light that comes on when the doors are opened.
I don't think the Ranger had any of the lights removed based on what I found when I took the truck apart as hardly anything was messed with up to the point of roll over.
As for the harness or wiring as Dave posted I am sure I seen the under dash / kick panel lights were just a plug in if you had the lights.
Just like the radio & clock wiring was standard so you could just plug them in. Now the door speaker wiring was not standard.
The Ranger parts truck had the door speaker harness, and the main dash harness had the radio & clock wiring, so it was just plug & play for my install of them.
What year did that information come from as I wonder if the early 80's Rangers did not have them standard?
Mine was late 80 (Custom) and early 81 (Ranger) and why I ask.

That would be nice but I dont thing there are any around now days but who knows
Now I was able to plug the clock into the trucks harness and it has been working for years now.
I got the clock off Ebay but you need to know IIRC there are 3 different plugs over the years on the clocks so you would need the harness to match the clock.
I know my clock is not hard wired but plugs in but dont remember just how this all worked as its been 6 years since I did this.
It has been 6 years that the truck is on the road now and if I have not added the under-dash lights by now I am not going to

Oh welcome to FTE

Thanks 🤙🏼
Gonna try to find a partnumber of this harness, maybe one of the garages that specialize in Ford trucks might know.
Those white plastic under dash housings are the same ones in my Cougar. I didnt know what bulb size they were originally, so I threw a 1156 bulb in and that thing was so bright you didnt even need the map light to read a piece of paper.
I dont have them on my truck, I did add the clock but I made my own harness from scratch though. Im not opposed to having under dash lights though but first I want to get my trucks interior refinished before I go adding accessories like that in.
