I cut the lock hole for the drivers door on my 55 before I sent it off the be blasted and primed. I have not tried the lock yet since I am not that far along. I carefully measured the location several times. I used a drill to get the correct size on each end and then hand filed the contour.
The nice part is that Ford cut the hole for the retainer clip already, which made the job easier.
there is a service bulletin that has a template to place in the door to put the lock in. All driver side service replacement doors new from ford did NOT come with lock provision. (53-56)
I made a template from the passenger door lock hole.
I also double and triple checked the alignment with the factory Ford retainer slot that is in the left door.
When you look at the template you can see that if you use the proper size drill bit and make two holes, one fore and the other aft, you can see that the hard part is done. Then I used a pneumatic body saw to connect the holes. All that was left was filing the notches.
