I may be mistaken or thinking about another car or truck. Those two little white nubs around the steering shaft. Are they what come around and knock the switch back to center when you are turning the wheel?

Yes, the little metal pin rides in a groove on the steering wheel and the white plastic lobes push the switch back to neutral when you unwind the turn.

Apparently, somebody manhandled this thing or may have turned lift while holding the right blinker. Hopefully you can see in the pictures but there is a white stress line in the fingers of the switch. It’s been bent far enough that the tab interferes with normal turning. Looks like a new switch is in my future.

So the fingers are actually being bent backward. That would make a loud clicking/crunching noise wouldn't it? Dorman may sell just this plastic assembly separate. Check around and see if they still sell it instead of the whole switch.

it dosen't get bent backwards, it "disengages" over and over again on left turns and grazes the tab on right turns

If only the cam needs replacement, see post #18 in this thread:

I do not recommend splicing the wires to replace the cam. I did that once and the clearance is very tight. See the link above above for an easy method (still untested) that needs no splicing.
