I've got a customer's engine that came into the shop for machine work. He's owned it for over 50 years and he always thought it was a 223 but it turns out that it's a 262. The cylinders are worn quite a bit and I was wondering if there is any source for a set of oversize pistons? The rest of it looks pretty good. The cam has the fuel pump lobe worn so I'm going to have to make a master to regrind that but that shouldn't be a problem. It is different than a 223 cam because this engine has a gear drive instead of a chain. What other things are different? Is the head gasket the same as with a 223 or are these like a 261 Chevy where the gasket is unique and different than the 235?
Almost everything internally is different on a 262 vs a 223. Crank, cam, pitons, rods, etc. When I rebuilt my 262 about 20 years ago pistons were hard to find. You may need to have custom pistons made if you can't find some NOS ones. Cams are NLA. I had mine reground. Most gaskets should interchange. The heads are similar castings, but the valves are different between the 2.
I can fix the cam in house but the piston thing is a problem and this engine while it looks great otherwise needs to be bored in a bad way. Yesterday my dad looked in the book and a 292 piston could be made to work if I decked the block .030 or so but the customer is willing to spring for a custom which might be better because that'll open the door to a lot better ring package.
