So, we have a 98 Expy, 4x/4.6/186k on it, it's now my daughters truck to school and back, and.... she needs tunes lol, what size speakers do we need, and any suggestions on a radio? I told her we'd get something for her X-mas present, so now I have to pony up! The stock speakers are trash, I think only one still works, a few others make noises.
My '01 runs 5x7/6x8 in the doors, yours too. Rear has a single sub, I posted data on me replacing it. A quick search will reveal it, it was parked for six months once I was back to TX from MI and I had forgotten I popped in a new sub HA It was a Pioneer for sure...still off stock amp which is about 70w RMS I think. Honestly sounds decent all things considered. One of my trucks has a massive stereo, so unfair comparison.
PO did a dual DIN JVC, sound quality is fine but wish it had XM as I prefer a few channels from it. I will probably upgrade the Mexpedition HU and toss that older one into my '01 Screw. JVC does make some mini solid state amplifier that plugs inline on the speaker line set. Pretty slick if you check into it. Easily could hide behind dash. I like JVC HUs, I some have rear cameras and such too. Speaker wise, Pioneer make good ones for reasonable as does Kicker. I run a lot of older Polks in stuff as I can steal them for a song. Figure $200 for two pairs new, snoop used you may find deals. I did a component set in my fronts like stock, in same 6x8 hole. Purchased a custom plate for reasonable cost. Rears are just 6x8 style with dual tweet I think.
If you have blown out speakers, basically ANYTHING will blow your socks off. My '01 Burb had same issue, all four 6.5s blown out (no surround). OE sub I replaced with a Kicker 8" and speakers all Pio with an old Pio 1.5 DIN HU. About face difference in sound quality.
Thanks Hit Man, I figured they were one or the other, haven't popped the door panels off yet, haven't done a HU install since 2012 when I bought my 02 F350, or speakers for that matter, but she is 18 and "needs" music lol. Going to make her do some research and assist with install so she has some skin in the game for it, and hopefully learns something in the process, just like when it's time to do oil changes and brakes, her truck, she's working on it also.
No prob, hope helps. Crutchfield is very competitive now and tons of back end help. Good to look there for brands, costs, ratings, FITMENT, etc. Metra has good adapter harnesses, unsure how to pop in a DD in these as it was already there. Probably need some sort of adapter kit and I am sure simple. These vehicles were designed early to mid 90s. Rear shocks will **** off a preacher to swap.
If she needs tunes (fair), tell her she 'needs' bluetooth with a mic to speak while driving. Keep us posted on installation and such. It is really simple, I forget how panels come off but I believe they lift up once the fasteners are removed and some trim. Maybe that is GM. Problems owning too many.
I did the rear shocks already... boy effin howdy are they a royal PITA!! Yeah, not going to be super hard I hope, she's 18 so there is no talking and driving, I've told her and shown her, you put on music and the only thing you get to do is turn it up or down, no fiddling around with anything else while driving, so not sure I want btooth, we'll see... thanks again for info
