Hello! I'm having a problem with a transit bus (2009 E-450) I have where it just clicks once when I use the ignition but it doesn't start. I'm in the process of diagnosing the issue, but I know the engine in this bus has been swapped out so I can't use the VIN to determine the engine. It was originally a diesel but is now regular gas. My understanding is there should be a plate somewhere on the engine identifying what it is, but I've been unable to locate anything to identify it. Can someone give me a pointer on where I might be able to look to find what motor this is? Thanks!!

Post a picture of the engine.. as best you can. Besides the 7.3 diesel the other engines that were available were the 4.6 and 5.4 V8's and the 6.8L V10. These would have been the easiest to swap in because all the parts needed to make it run like factory would be available with a donor. Of course something completely different could have been swapped in too but it would take a lot of hacking that would be obvious even to an untrained eye.
Assuming the van ran normally before this problem and the battery isn't dead, the click no crank symptom suggests either a security issue with the key... is the little key icon flashing on the dash?, or a failed starter. I lost a starter last summer with no warning, started the truck and drove somewhere and parked, came back 30mins later and nothing but a click. I have also seen the security problem with other Fords of this vintage, symptoms are similar except for the security icon flashing.
It happens to friends of mine when they go to West Yellowstone (twice is all)
They get clear the hell out of town then their vehicle will not start (just a click)
They call me
I told my doctor buddy to try it 100 times
Make it click 100 times and call me back
On try 30 or 40 he called back and said it started
I told him "drive it straight to me, your starrer needs to be replaced"
