Engine options

I was told that with the VIN number I can tell what engine is in the truck. I was told that in the VIN, the 8th position tells the type of engine and that a H stands for 351W. I would like to find out what the other letters are and their corresponding engine type. Does anyone know where I can find this info?

The reason I would like to know this is that I'm looking for a wrecked vehicle for the engine and the place I'm looking lists the first 10 digits of the VIN number of the vehicles and I would like to know the type of engine they have.

Thanks

Some common ones for older trucks are : 'Y'=4.9L I-6, 'N'=5.0L V-8, 'H'=5.8L V-8, and 'G'=7.5L V-8. Engine sizes in cubic inches : 4.9L=300cid,5.0L=302cid,5.8L=351cid,and 7.5L=460cid.Hope this helps.

You can also try http://www.autobaza.pl/autobaza/page.cgi?lang=1 (vin checker) to get some more information.
