Engine serial #

Where on the engine do I locate the serial #? Is there a way to determine if the engine is the original one, based on the VIN and engine #? Whom would I contact to find out?

Being a former Mopar guy, I did my darndest to find what I thought was a stamped engine identifier. It was always there on the Mopars (60s & 70s). But on my 1995 and 1999 Fords, I never found anything that statisfied me....just part numbers. So, if its there tell me too, and I'll crawl all over it again.
