Strange e4od issue

Hello all
longtime reader, first post I have 1996 f250 with 5.8 and an e40d trans. (Model still has obd1 not obd2) a little history on it I had the trans rebuilt and since the rebuild I have had intermittent hard shifts like trans is getting full line pressure with flashing od light but have had no luck pulling codes as it usually stops while driving. I have replaced MPLS and made sure it was the correct wiring harness going to it. Third brake light works fine and passes KOER tests. VSS has also been replaced with motorcraft. Recently figured out almost every time I have this hard shift issue is when I’m slowing/stopping and turn right with a slight uphill grade before. (Has occurred multiple times in the same spots around town) When I accelerate after the turn is when the first hard shift occurs. Haven’t found any other threads with an issue like this curious if anyone could point me in a direction as to what could cause this.

Thanks
adam

When the light flashes codes are stored, they are supposed to stay in memory for 30 warm up cycles after the last time the error was found. Have you actually tried reading the codes?

Without the codes, just start buying parts and replacing them until you run out of money or get really lucky.

I have tried plugging in obd1 scanner but nothing. I recently saw doing the jumper to get the lights to flash and can try that. The last couple times I have had this problem there was no OD light flashing and there was never a time with a check engine

edit-
essentially that jumper trick does the same thing as the scanner it seems

Happened when driving truck this morning, OD light stayed flashing, shut off truck and did koeo and koer tests fully passed both. Can the innova obd1 scanner read the codes from the trans? Even when I brought to transmission shop the fancy snap on scanner couldn’t retrieve any codes either. I’ve been chasing this problem for a year and with no codes and the intermittence of it has been extremely frustrating

Have you looked at the computer board?

Flashing OD light or MIL with no codes stored indicates operator error when pulling codes or a damaged computer.

I got the codes indicating it has passed all tests and there were no stored codes in computer memory just 111 that was it. Are you referring to the ECU? It wasn’t operator error did both tests multiple times following the manual with my obd1 scanner multiple times and also have done it in the past as well

PCM, ECU, EEC, etc.

Pull it out and check the board.

gotcha wasn’t being a wise a** just wanted to make sure that’s what you were referring to, I’ll check it out. A few months back when I got the code 311 thermatic fault but have not since and don’t believe that could cause intermittent trans issue. No codes this last time or since

If you have never pulled it before the easiest thing to do is to remove the fasteners holding the rear half of the driver side fender liner and pull it loose.

Remove the harness connector. Single 10mm bolt then wiggle pull free. The bolt will stay in the harness connector.

Remove the retainer. Two nuts. 11mm or 12mm.

Slide computer out. The case is held together with 2 small torx screws.

If you have speed control I find it easier to move the servo out of the way.

thanks for the tips I removed the computer and opened it up. I found no damage or corrosion scorch marks or visibly bad capacitors. It looks like someone has replaced it in the past the computer has a QR code sticker on it which I tried scanning but brought me nowhere.

Looks like possibly 2013/remanufactured taking an educated guess deciphering the QR code sticker

Looks like a cardone rebuild. PN shows as a 96 5.8 computer. Are there any codes on the other side?

The board looks clean to me. I do see some sort of blob where the 60 pins come into the board. Might just be dust, can't tell in the photo.

So, with nothing obviously wrong with the board you are back to operator error or something unusual going on with the computer. With it being a cardone rebuild I would look for another 94+ 5.8/e4od computer.

I discount a harness problem as you would still have a code since the light is illuminating.

I don’t see how I could make a mistake pulling the codes and following the manual to a T to do so. If I make a mistake and get a code for failing to hit the OD button or touch the brake rev the engine I start over from the beginning but today that did not happen. And the KOEO test is so straightforward I don’t know how I could possibly mess that up So I guess I’ll look for a new computer doing a quick google search there is a company called flagship one that sells them. Any familiarity with them?

thanks for your help and responsiveness.
