I went to get a new Thermistat yesterday for my 97 Explorer V6 and the lady in Auto Zone asked what type of 4.0 V6 engine it had, as there is 2 different types.
Problem is that I have no idea, so my question is.... how do I tell what engine type it has?
Sorry for asking such a silly question, but I just bought the car and it did not come with any information booklets.
What year Explorer do you have. 91 - 94 only have the V6 OHV. Starting in 95, Ford used two different V6 motors and the V8. Real quick check is to open the hood. On the plastic cover on the top of the motor, it will say 4.0 SOHC if you have that motor. I can't speak for the OHV since I don't have that motor. You can also run the vin to find out what motor you have. I found a good site a while ago that gives you the breakdown on the vin number. Here it is... https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenan...ls/default.asp
Position 8 on the vin number is what you need for the engine code. If you have an X in the 8th spot you have the 4.0 OHV. If you have an E in the 8th spot you have the 4.0 SOHC.
Hope that helps... let us know how you make out.
