I have a 1993 4x4 explorer that has the V-6 engine. The valves are very loud and a local mechanic said the lifters needed replacing. Is this a common problem? Its so expensive to replace them and still have a wore out motor that I probably need to replace the entire engine. Is it possible to put a straight 6 300 in this truck? Will it bolt up to the auto tranny and the motor mounts or is it easy to adapt??? The V-6 is wore out and I don't know it as well as the 300 when it comes to overhauling.
My EX has had the same noisy lifters for some time now but the wife keeps on truckin'! Doesn't seem to bother performance too much so we have learned to live with it. I understand it requires tearing down the top part of the engine to change the lifters so don't have the time ( or the money) to do that.
On the 300 inline 6, it won't bolt up to the trans.....different bolt pattern ( the same as the 5.0/302 ) and you would probably run into clearance problems with the radiator. Sorry to burst your bubble!
Thanks for the reply. Does yours make the normal low ping or a louder tapping. Mine got really loud. I checked the rockers arms and found one that had at least a 3/16 indention sore in it. I replaced it and it helped alot. I suspect that there is another one on the other side. A relative scared my wife into thinking it will break and fall into the engine. I can't see that happening but more of your advice would be welcomed.
Mine is a little strange. It will start with a low ping and then increase to a loud tap and then fade off to a low ping. It goes up and down like a yo-yo! Some times it will even quit completely for a minute and then start right back up. It sounds like it is coming from my right head but I have not pulled the valve cover to check the rocker arms yet. Like I said, we just learned to live with it but it is very annoying. This has been going on for 20k miles since it started to give you an idea how safe your motor is. Some day I'll get to this problem.........
