Another exhuast question.

88 F250 460 Auto Trans. Truck is stock, Cat was Gutted. I’ll be getting a “cheaper” car back exhaust. I plan on doing headers at some point. Should I go 3 inch single or 2.25 duals? Has aux tank so it’ll dump out after rear tire

Cat back would be a kit so you get whatever it is. Long tube or shorties? You are going to have to completely start over from scratch with long tubes so why go through the expense now only to do it again in the near future?

Auxiliary tank? Are you saying that there is a fuel tank in the bed?

3" single after that cat is plenty. Use a good quality 3" in/out straight-through muffler and a single 3" tail and you'll be golden!

My former otherwise-stock '97 7.5L got that cat-back after the original muffler rotted out due to Ohio rust... Sounded great!!!!

My current '95 is getting the same Cat-back, although an upgrade to mid-length headers in a 2-1/2 dual-to-single 3" Y-pipe feeding into the stock 3" in/out cat, 3" on back to a 3" single in/out straight-through muffler and 3" single tailpipe. SOUNDS AWESOME!!!!!

The Banks Stinger kit is 3" to a single in/single out muffler with 3.5" all the way from muffler to tailpipe. I'm not an engineer but he pays them so just letting you know what Gale Banks designed.

Misewell the headers at the same time if you can afford it.

Just don't run duals all the way back, you'll lose off idle hp with a setup like that.

The 88’ cat is probably only a 2-1/2” outlet ( my 90 was) so you will have to modify outlet of your cat which is easy.

When I was doing my exhaust back last May, I looked at Banks but they no longer make anything for our trucks. So I ended up going with a Gibson 3” cat back kit for a 95’ since they didn’t list one for a 90’ either. I was surprised that the 3” straight through muffler was not louder than it is.

If you want to see a good show about dual vs single vs turbo muffler vs straight through, check out Engine Masters season 5 episode 7. Pretty surprising at the torque gain at 3000 RPM.
