Had PPF applied to several higher end cars in the past. Never was 100% happy with the results. If I ever got it done again would have the installer put it in writing they guaranteed no bubbles or lint specs in the film when I pick up the vehicle and that they would fix any defects that pop up in the first year. If they did not agree I would move on.
The problem is today, like realtors, there are probably more detailers than there are Americans. PPF is very high margin and every kid wants to start a PPF and ceramic coating business. Unfortunately, as you've noted, most aren't very good at doing it perfectly - the skill gap between 90% and 100% is quite large.

This is why I insist on the written guarantee. I had the front end of a new ZL1 Camaro done and made three visits back to the shop (80 miles each way). Defect after defect. Finally the owner/installer admitted he was over his head and took it to a top rate installer. Not only did I not pay the original guy but he agreed to pay the difference to have the other shop finish the job right.
Trick is to find a shop that has been in the window tinting business for a decade or more as some trend into going into PPF install since it's similar work. You HAVE to be good to install window tint because the smallest flaw is a big problem. Never let a guy do it who will have it done the next day. A good installer will take their time in a dust free environment to get it right. There is one in Rockford that is like this. They only do PPF on weekends and only 2 cars at a time, Drop it off Friday, pick it up Monday. The shop is closed Saturday and Sunday so no dust gets picked up and blown around, and they take the time to detail the paint first. The little bit I did on my F450 would be $1800 minimum. I just did the 18" of nose protection on hood and fenders. A full on front end with bumper and grill and lights would be $3,000 minimum.
