Quote for stud install...

Called my local diesel shop got a quote of $2300 for labor(30hrs) to install studs and headgaskets (I would supply those).

Is this about right?

1900 should be a closer to fair deal, particularly if you're supplying the studs. Only thing that might influence price versus here would be cost of living in that area, which might make it roughly the same depending on that.

Are you refering to River City?? Take a look at what they do as part of the service... the quote I got from local was just labor for removing cab and removing/reinstalling heads.

1900 is what I paid Bean to do most of that. He didn't do the multi-layer gaskets, don't need that type of gasket unless you're doing an all out race truck well over 550 hp. Gaskets aren't our issue, it's the bolts. I still use stock gaskets and I'm at 508. Also Bean didn't charge for the injectors, fluidampner and the RR kit as well(atleast labor, which is what RCD is referring to, you still pay for the components themselves). It's a little on the high side, which RCD is known to be. They make good stuff, I have their 64mm turbo, but it's still on the high side.

What other components besides the studs an gasket? $2800 installed seems great compared to what I was quoted for the amount of service provided. I'd be happy to go somewhere else that offered the same service for less.

As far as stud install, there really isn't any. I just noticed that on RCDs website(the link you posted) it said that they would install their injectors and turbos w/o additional charge which is what Bean did for me when I had my injectors, fluidnamper and RR kit put on, but I still had to pay for the cost of the individual components, it was just they didn't charge additional for labor.

If the shop that did the 2300 quote, if they weren't planning on doing the coolant flush and re-fill and the ac charge after an "operation" like this, then they aren't the best shop to be doing this at. Now milling the heads(re-surfacing them), stuff like that may or may not need to be done, it depends on an individual basis, but that can be outsourced to a machine shop and that would be extra unless the shop did that inhouse as a matter of course. However, you may or may not need to have that done, it just depends like I said on an individual basis.

Now, I will add this caveat to what I said about the price, this was a couple of yrs ago, so prices, I wouldn't be surprised if they did, might have gone up and that 1900 that I was quoted a couple of yrs ago may no longer be valid. I just thought of that now. Also, if that 2300 was just for physical stud installation and not for anything else(coolant, ac charge , oil/filter change etc) then they are begging for some stuff to happen or they are trying to get you on price.

Im sure there idea of a PS flush, charge A/C/ change oil/filter is all stuff that woul dbe done no matter who did it. Got to evac. the a/c anyway, got to drain the ps anyway, got to drain the coolant anyway, got to change the oil anyway. They are just using that stuff as selling tactics.

Yeah I can see that but my local shop was only counting labor hours to remove the cab and install the studs/reinstall heads. He still needed to figure out what to charge for additional labor.

But if anyone else has somebody else that can do all this work cheaper then speak up and let me know..I'll make a trip.
