1998 Ford E-250 5.4L Advantage Locks Acting Erratically
Hello,
My 1998 Ford E-250 Van locks are acting erratically. This has been happening since I bought it back in June of 2024. I noticed it first when working on the van when I had the doors opened and I heard the locks actuate. It does not have a keyless entry, and I did not have the keys in the ignition. It happened a few times since then and continues to happen. I've also walked to the van after a night's rest and noticed the doors are all open when I locked them before leaving.
It does not matter if the van is on or off, it happens whenever it wants it seems, no rhyme or reason. I did address the really easy and accessible things like the relays, fuses and switches on the doors. The fuses and relays all seem to be fine and working well, no signs of damage or burn out. The switches don't look damaged or indicate any sign of wear or damage. I'm thinking of getting new switches for the door panels from a junk yard and installing them to see if that helps.
Does anyone have similar issues or has had similar issues? What is a possible cause of this problem and a possible fix?
You don't say if you have sliding or hinged side door(s). If you have a sliding side door there is an additional module for that door (see wiring diagram 4 for explanation).
Otherwise, since the power goes through all switches, switch replacement makes sense as a troubleshooting measure.
Also inspect the wiring , especially where it passes from the body to the door. A cut or corroded wire may be contacting the frame. The switches may have a foreign substance that occasionally conducts electricity.
+1 for inspecting the wires through the accordion (drivers door mainly) but check both doors wiring
+1 for replacing the switches if you see no problems with the door wiring
Open the back door and remove the door lock, mine had corroded to the point it was interrupting the loop, I had to replace that switch, end of problem, lots of moisture in that door.

Replaced the switches to no avail.
Did look where the fuse box was an found some connectors that were not connected to anything. Does anyone have any idea where there are meant to be connected or if this affects the doors?
