2 part carburetor question

Hi all,
Among other troubles, my 69 e100 with a 302 and a 2 barrel is picking up a lot of dirt from the fuel tank. The tank looks pretty clean from the outside but maybe it had condensation and developed some rust inside and that's what's happening. Rather than try a rebuilding kit and cleaning the carburetor I think what I'm going to do is buy a carburetor and put inline fuel filters in two different places in the line. I want to replace the steel line that runs the length of the van with rubber line too. (Is that t good idea? So I have a couple of questions before buying everything. I see carbs on Amazon for just a little bit over $80. I thought I'd see if anybody could sell me one today but when I check prices at AutoZone some of them are like $700 and the cheapest one is $211. Is there really a difference of any kind? Is an $83 carburetor okay? And the second part of my question is what is the ID of the rubber hose I need to buy to run the length of the van. I just want to replace that rather than try to clean it out. Any advice would be a greatly appreciated.

thanks,
Scott

Rubber fuel line is a BAD idea. You should try to use as little of that as possible.

Repacing the carb is not a bad idea, but getting a rebuild kit and cleaning your carb is a cheaper idea.

A lot of carbs on the market today are poor reproductions and are not as reliable as OEM carbs.

The Ford 2bbl is easy to fiddle with.

Isn't there a fuel filter somewhere in your system already?

There is the factory fuel filter that screws into the carb, but I was thinking if I get one of the transparent inlines near the tank I could take a look at it every so often to see if it keeps getting debris in it. If it does I might have to resort to cutting the trailer hitch out of the way and bringing the tank to a place that cleans them and lines the inside.

Just check the factory type filter. Cut one open.

Disconnect the fuel line and rig up a hose to a bucket. Pressurize the fuel tank and see what you collect in the bucket. Use the usually "gas fumes everywhere" precautions.

I would bet you are on your way to tank cleaning or replacement.

Put a filter before the fuel pump, mine rusted the tank, just kept changing the filter every few months, still some got by so every 6 months I'd swap the carb with a spare, so I could clean it out and set aside to swap back later, you can't put 2 filters under the hood as it'll boil out in summer, just run one on the frame before the fuel pump, thats enough, more make no difference as fine stuff will get through.
If you don't buy 100% gas the ethanol collects moisture, which sinks to the bottom rusting you tank, there is nothing you can do now, its too late to fix it, just purge it all out, and run a filter before the pump, and run 100% gas or be ready to suffer the consequences.
Amazon has Chinese copies of the Autolite 2100 for $75 is what I paid, you can't really mess one up, reconditioned ones will leak at the throttle shaft sucking air making tuning a pain.

There are no tanks made for his van, he will have to modify one from a 76 to fit, some have had luck using a Jeep Cherokee tank, just won't hold as much fuel.
