Help!! 6.0 Idling?? Starting?

Dad has 2003 f350 SRW 6.0 litre, crew cab, shortbox, 4x4,lariat, and it idled when it was warm (after 25 mile drive) for about fifteen - twenty minutes and the temp gauge looked like it went down a bit. Just wondering if this is normal or should a high idle kick in to prevent it?? Also want to know if anyone has a viabration or chugging at startup? Sometimes does it when it gets started cold (always kept in garage that stays about +7 celcius. live in saskatchewan) or after it has sat for awhile. Asked dealer about idling and he didn't seem to know much or say much. It gets warmed up every morning for about 2- 5 mintues (depending on the temperature) and cooled off after longer drives or when pulling for anywhere from 2-10 minutes. ( pull a loaded 31 ft gooseneck flatdeck) Change oil every 5000 - 8000kms depending on how much it pulls Just want to know if we are doing the right thing with letting it warm up and cool off?? everyone seems to have a different opinion. Truck died at a stoplight one night but fired back up right away. Otherwise love truck, especially engine and automatic transmission (the tow/haul mode is really nice) bought it 2 1/2 months ago and already have over 27 000kms on it. Hope this one stands up like the 7.3's did. Would like to hear from anybody with similiar problems or how much they love or maybe even hate thier truck??

wow im suprised you didnt get any replies to this yet. i have the same problem with cold start-ups ( i live in Minnesota ) anywhere under 40 degrees f it chugs and knocks like its lacking fuel, about 5 seconds afetr startup. i went to Ford and they said theyd do a reflash of the computer, but i havent heard anything good come from the flashes.

no one else i know has had this rough idle that ive gotten, its nice to know im not the only one now!

I live in B.C Canada..it was -20c last nite and we get -40 every winter...we plug in the block heater..it REALLY PUTS OUT THE HEAT..and we keep the fuel tank over 1/2 tank always...
We have a add on oil pan heater that straps on the bottom of the oil pan and is also plugged in below -20 at home and below -15 at work ( celsius).....

I have never had any problems starting the new 2003 6.o.starts fast..runs smooth and after 2 minutes slowly move off untill trans and oil are in normal temp. I also have gauges DI PRICOL pillar and use them MORE than oem..
The truck cools off in less than 2 minutes even afeter pulling trailer usually a lot less..NEVER 20 MINUTES.

Long time since this post - the 6.0 is largely electronic, the 7.3 was not. Runability issues are best diagnosed by someone with equipment to talk to the truck. Truck will almost tell you what the issue is.
Warm up and cool down are both critical for the PSD. Warm up 2-10 min depends on temp and use block heater below zero celcius. Cool down after hard run 2-3 min at idle to cool turbo. Heavy hauling with the 6.0 should use pyrometer (EGT gauge) and don't run over 650 celcius (1200 F) for long. Heat will kill the 6.0.
