Now that its cold out my truck is really hard to start first time for the day. If i plug it in it will fire right up if i dont plug it in it could take upto 10 min in 30 deg weather. I replaced my bats thinking maybe they were a tad weak but didnt help. This is a 99 F350 7.3 with 112,000 miles with no problems since i have owned it at 56,000. I get reg oil changed and filter change but never done the glow plug relay or glow plugs... or the high oil level not sure what that is but read people talking about it. If someone could help with this that would be great. I have not really looked at the motor much but i looked for the glow plugs this weekend with no luck. (they under the valve cover?) I am no dummie when it comes to cars and motors(I race a dirt mod) but not to much on the 7.3 and would like to do the glow plugs myself. Thanks Craig Moore
The glow plugs are under the valve covers, They are right next to the injectors toward the center of the engine, they have one wire going to them with a black cap. they are very easy to replace if you have any mechanical skill.
In replacing the glow plugs, you'll find that getting the valve covers off is the most troublesome part of the whole job. While you're in there, replace all eight glow plugs, and inspect the wiring harnesses that are inside the valve covers closely. The plastic pieces can get brittle over time, and a faulty connection can give you problems.
Ok now how do i know if the plugs are bad or if its a relay? What about the high oil thingy? I mean i dont want to have to tear into it if its just a relay. Thanks guys
How many hours would it take to replace my glow plugs? I've narrowed it down and that is one of the few things left to check. Can you check them without removing anything? Or do I have to tear into it to see if they are bad? I'm taking it to a shop this morning, will their machine be able to tell if it's the glow plugs?
To test the glow plugs you have to pull them out and check their resistance. If you have gone through the truouble to get them out it is worth it to replace all of them then you are sure that they are good. Don't know how to tell if it is the relay. never ran across that problem.
