i see a lot of people call the M5OD and the ZF5 4 speed with overdrive.
i dont bother trying to correct them anymore because i usually only get the deer in the headlights look from them

I think a good portion of the problem comes from the shift know itself.
1-2-3-4-OD. So it is a 4 speed with overdrive in most people's heads. If ford would have put a 5 on there, everyone would just call it what it is....a 5 speed.
But, the era where these trucks started getting the 5 speeds, there were still old heads that were used to the old over the road trucks that had a five speed Spicer that 5th was still 1:1 and not overdrive manuals. So my guess is, to sell the idea of better mpg on the customer, is they called them 4 speed with overdrive.

'87 was before the M5OD was introduced, so it is possible to have a 4-speed overdrive. I had one in my '87, it's a TOD or T170, based on an older toploader and SROD. I usually shifted around 2500 or so, but would wind out 2nd a little more to have better acceleration in 3rd (imagine shifting from 2nd to 4th in a 5-speed).

5 speed

My 88 has a 5.0 with the M5OD transmission and 4wd. Has a 355 rear ring and pinion. I shift around the 1800 rpm range. And yes its a 5 speed!

A 302 doesn't usually blow up until it gets past 6k,
and way before then the lifters have pumped up to save you from yourself.
But even before that, the heads have you sucking vacuum because the ports
are so dinky....
Just to say that shifting at 4500, if the engine is still pulling there,
nothing bad is going to happen. Towing up significant grades, the 3500 range
seems to make best power...

I've also noticed that oil pressure starts to fall off when revs drop below 1200, hot,
so I don't let it drop below that when it's under load.

t
not all that mechanically sympathetic.

IMO, shifting that early is lugging the engine and not saving you anything
You aren’t even getting into the engine’s power band.

I shift pretty early not to save gas (although I don't think it's costing me much) but to not have to listen to a busy/buzzy engine. If I want more power I'll definitely wind it out a little, and I don't lug it under load when there's not a lot of oil pressure. But if it's happily pulling at 1200 rpm with not a lot of throttle there's no reason to spin it at 3500.
