I have a 302 1992 f150 with headers and a manual trany.
My question is I idle at 750 rpm and will run the rpm to about 2200-2300 before shifting.
From what I am reading in some the the previous posts is I may be shifting too soon. Is this right?
I do get ~13-14 miles to the gallon.
The cluster does not have a tach on it so I installed a sunpro tach into one of the blanks to the right of the cluster and place a tap into the accell super coil.
Where do I redline at? Is there a way to tell. Haynes manual does not say much.
The owner's manual tells the shift points, but it gives 3 charts for each transmission - one for each condition: accelerating, cruising, and downshifting, and also for 2 & 4WD. In the '92 Bronco manual, it's on pp. 117-118.
It really depends on the situation for the proper shift point. I usually shift before or right at 2k. If I wana get on it to get in front of someone I might hang on till 2800-3000. For a redline, it really does not good (HP wise) to shift more than 4500rpm...you could probably go to 5000 or more but all your doing is burning up the engine all that much faster.
For a lazy accleration I shift my 5.0 at 1900-2000 on a flat road with no one behind me. Usually it's at 2500-2700. Lately I can't shift any less than 3500 because my engine is so loud right now and it sounds too good to pass by. I wind it out to 5 grand fairly often too, sounds too good to be true. I will wind first out to 5 grand, 2nd to 4500, 3rd to 4000 and by that time i'm going 80-85 so I don't need to accerlate anymore.

WOW, so what kind of gas mileage do you get reving it up so often? Im lucky if I hit 10 while im babying it.

Sounds like you need a good tune-up, and maybe the right gear to drive your speedo. I'm pushing an extra 1,000lb with a lead foot, and I get a steady 12mpg.
I have a '96 F-150 Supercab 2WD with a 300 4.9L Inline 6 5 speed. I have found that I get the best gas mileage when I shift at 2500. If I needed to get fast accel., I would go to 3000. I have also found myself taking off my tailgate on trips longer than about 18 miles, unless I'm hauling something. -Joe
Steve, your 100% correct. The normal tune up parts on my truck are fairly recent, but the truck isn't running the best air/fuel ratio at present. When it warms up it shows a check engine light. I scanned it and Im almost positive the O2 sensor and something in the EGR is messed up, but since my new engine is going into my truck soon (seems like it gets dragged out farther and farther every day) I don't plan to mess with it. Im getting completely different wiring/sensors/exhaust/and basically everything else that has to do with emisions. Those figures are also calculated with the speedo errror Seems to me I only was getting 12 at best, even before the lift.
