Help all, this is for posterity and for feedback for a semi Macguyver “repair”
my downpipe has been leaking by at the connection. For reference, I bought and installed the diamond eye 4” turbo back muffler delete system from Riff Raff and installed it last summer. The down pipe flange had a pinhole leak(I welded closed before installing) and the flange itself seemed slightly under sized.
turns out, it was leaking around the flange no matter how much I tightened the clamp.
tried a new motorcraft clamp and still leaked.
so I put a little strip of header wrap around the flanges and clamped over the wrap. It’s been about a week and, so far, annoying leak solved. If it fails, I guess I’ll have to replace the down pipe. But for now, I’m happy without the leak resonating into my cab.
The fit and finish on those aftermarket downpipes are real hit or miss. Diamond Eye or MBRP are usually pretty good. Avoid overtightening the marmon clamp or you'll strip the bolt. There's little give and the downpipe either fits right on the flange or it don't and tightening the hell out of the clamp wont fix anything. I Snug it up easy with a 1/4" drive handle and a deep socket and re-check it a couple times.
