So about 2 months ago I was changing the glow plugs and the driver’s side went great. Passenger side not so much. The back 2 unthread but the tip must be swollen and the 3rd from back broke . I’ve searched and searched the internet for a solution and no clear luck. Can someone please be straightforward with me on how I’m going to get them out. Already used penetrating oil. 1983 6.9idi. Thanks in advance!
Glow plugs get replaced on a "as required" basis. Glow plug life depends heavily on what temperature environment they're used in. In hot climates, a cold engine's glow plugs may only operate for 5 seconds before turning off. In cold climates, the same engine's glow plugs will stay on for 20 seconds.
My glow plugs in my 1994 IDI are now 10 years old and 50,000 miles on them and they're still working fine.
When your engine starts up on 7 cylinders, or when your glow plug controller starts rhythmically clicking, that's when it's time to replace your glow plugs.

You can't use just any penetrating oil. You must use pb blaster. I know it sounds crazy, but I had the same problem and someone here demanded that I use pb blaster and it worked.
On the broken one, you only have two options.
A) remove the head and punch out the tip to remove it, or;
B) punch out the tip and let it fall in the combustion chamber and hope it goes out the exhaust valve without hurting anything.
Someone else may have a different method.
to get stuck glow plugs out i soak with PB blaster and chuck the glow plug into a variable speed reversable drill. slowly spin thge low plug while pulling up GENTLY and pushing down.and spraying more. the PB loosens up the tip material and the spinning as you gently lift it will shave it away to let it come out.
and dont loose patience. i have had some come out in 5 minutes, others take two three days of spending a 1/2 hour on every 3-4 hours.
the key is penetrate with PB, and gentle spinning and up down movement
