throwout bearing?

Have a '73 Camp Spl. 360. 2wd. 4 speed w/ granny gear. Starting in 1st gear I get a whine when I am disengaging the clutch for the gear. I assume it is the throwout bearing. Truck drives well and shifts well. Condition of the truck and engine gives me opinion that the 42k on odometer is correct . Truck came from San Jose and PO used it for having his slide in Camper. Any thoughts? Do I damage the clutch/bearing etc by continuing to drive it? I would say it whines 60% of the time in first, and once in awhile disengaging clutch in 2nd. Thank you and Happy and Safe New year to all.

If the throw out is bad it'll make noise whenever you disengage the clutch, what gear it's in makes no difference. yes it can cause damage to the clutch fork and pressure plate fingers if it get's bad enough.

Seems to me, that if you have a throw out bearing that’s whining, it should whine anytime you press on the clutch pedal.
The throwout bearing doesn’t care, nor does even know what gear your transmission is in.
Generally speaking, you’re not gonna damage any other components as the throwout bearing starts to age out. But that’s no guarantee, because eventually the throw up bearing could disintegrate and then you would have at least some damage to the fingers on the clutch pressure plate.
Probably not much else to be damaged really. but you don’t want even that, of course!

And the mileage really isn’t in play here I wouldn’t think. If the 42K is correct, that’s certainly well under the typical life of a throwout bearing.
But, if you or any of the previous owners have a tendency to ride the clutch, or keep the clutch depressed that traffic stops, or under any other conditions, it will wear out long before it’s normal expected mileage crops up.
Of course, the 42,000 miles is also pretty close to the age of the truck in years! And grease does get old eventually.
So it’s not out of character for a throwout bearing to be going out at this point. Just that it might be other things as well.
Just out of curiosity, have you checked the oil level and type in your transmission?

Bearing noise

From the description it could be the main input bearing in the front of the transmission. The lower gears put a side load on the bearing more than the last 2.

73 throw out bearing

Thank you all for the replies. Have not chked the manual gear box for fluid level. As it had a camper on it I would imagine the PO riding the clutch for hills , backing up etc. unfortunately PO passed on and I bgt the truck from the estate . I take it only way to check the bearing is to pull the engine? And if that is done I take it a new clutch and main seal would be in order? Or is there a way to lubricant the bearing from under the truck thru the clutch fork rubber boot? Thank you all again and have a Safe and Healthy New Year

Throw out bearing

And lastly, it only whines when I am releasing the clutch to go into gear. It does not whine when clutch is fully pressed down.

To replace the bearing you only need to pull the transmission back far enough to get the new one on.

If it's making noise mainly on the engagement that sounds like a clutch problem or possibly a pilot bushing. . which would still only require pulling the transmission.
