I was recently given my 92 4x4 2.9l ranger (5sp manual trans w/4x4 shift on the fly and auto locking hubs), and while it runs real well, I think I may need to replace the throwout bearing. When 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, gear is engaged, there is a whining sound that ceases when the clutch is engaged. While driving in 4th gear there is nothing, no sound, and while driving in 5th (OD), I can very faintly hear the same whining sound. The sound did occur when idling with the clutch disengaged, but when i got in it today to move it, i could not hear it at all at an idle.
If the throw out bearing is bad, you should be able to hear it in every gear because the bearing rides in the same spot in every gear or in neutral. Usually the bearing will get louder as you first start to push the clutch in. Hopefully its not a main shaft bearing in the trans. How many miles are on the truck?
Just from the sound of it, it sounds like gear mesh noise. Try swapping out the fluid in the transmission. Otherwise, unless it is really bad, and it shifts in and out of gear pretty easy, I'd not worry about it too much. This would be true if you have lots of miles on the truck.
And by the way, the bearing really only "works" when you push the clutch in and it contacts the fingers of the pressure plate.
Actually the symtoms point to a coutershaft bearing issue, the counter shaft is engaged under load in all gears except 4th (the only direct drive gear in that trans). This has nothing at all to do with the clutch.
Thank You monster, you called it right on the money. The truck was a gimme, and has 290,000 miles on it. So I guess I got my work cut out for me. Thank you very much for your help.
