I am new to this site but have already found it helpful. I own a 2001 F150 Super Crew, 5.4l 4x4. I have already had the manifold off to ream and tap all the plug wells and replaced a cracked intake during that time. I am changing all the fluids at this time and am on the transfer case. There seems to be much talk about what fluid to use. My owner's manual says to use Mercon ATF or equivalent, so why is there disagreement? Is it because the fluid has been changing with the different generations of F150s?
I looked around. It appears to be because Mercon was replaced by Mercon V, but Mercon V has issues in the older transfer cases. Use XL-12 instead. This thread has more info: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...uirements.html
Maybe others can chime in with recommendations.
