My 2004 Ford excursion is giving me a complete headache. It all started about a year ago. I was running it hard and when it shifted into fifth gear, it missed and klunked pretty hard into gear. Drove fine after that for about 20 miles or so but when I went to back up, It had a lot of shudder. Drove it home again with no issues, But reverse seemed sluggish engaging. Changed the external filter, everything seemed fine. About two months later, I begin noticing it Wanting to miss fourth gear occasionally and slam in the gear but I babied it along. Then started getting reverse issues again. so I dropped the pan changed the filters and put new fluid in. Ran fine for about three months (about 1500 miles) then it seemed as though it would slowly disengage inDrive and totally lost reverse. Changed external filter again. Reverse seemed as though it would engage with some minor Throttle. Recently totally lost reverse and overdrive so I went back dropped the pan pulled the filters flushed the coolers put new filters in fluid in. I did make a mistake and overfill it by about 3 quarts. But I started it up. Let it warm up, put it in gear and nothing no engagement in any gears.. I drained the excess fluid out, and pulled the external filter, which to my surprise was completely dry. Started it up still no gears. Filter is now full fluid level is correct but still no gears. Transmission temp Seems fine. No codes. What is the proper procedure to diagnose this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Were you changing the fluid at the correct intervals before these problems started occurring? At this point, it's gonna need at least a rebuild, or a total replacement. The 5r110w is usually a really good and reliable transmission with proper maintenance, so most likely what caused this was improper maintenance
