223 Distributor Question

I'm not sure where to post this as this Inline Forum doesn't say 223 but here it goes anyway.

I'm working on my 1960 F100 4X4 223, 4 Speed and I've got a distributor question. I'm almost positive this is not the original engine but the data plate indicates it came with a 223.

I bought a new Petronix electronic ignition kit (module, wires and coil) but could not see how to snake the Pertronix positive wire out of the distributor without removing the distributor from the engine. When I removed the distributor I found a remnants of well beaten cotter key that was just bare holding the oil pump drive shaft in the distributor. Is this normal? Is the cotter key supposed to be a hardened pin similar to the one that hold the drive gear on? I can't seem to find much info on this distributor on line. See pictures below.

BJ, I would also think that is not normal but on the 300 six that our trucks came with the oil pump drive stays in the motor or it has on mine when I pulled the dist for re-curving.

Your best thing to get information about your motor / dist. is to ask in the 1957 - 1960 area https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum268/
Or the 1961 - 1966 area https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum40/
As they may know that motor better that we would.
Sorry cant be more help

Thanks Dave. I thought I might have better luck with the motor guys first. I'll post over there and see what they have to say.
