When you have your tailgate off the truck, how do you store it to prevent damage? Has anyone found a crate or storage container to protect the tailgate?
I don't have a lot of storage space in my garage and am looking for something better than wrapping the tailgate in moving blankets.
I remove my in bed tool box then lay the tailgate on top of the tool box wrapped in a moving blanket. Stored inside my shed. 12 years so far no damage.
Why would you need something better than a moving blanket?
maybe two blankets would be better?
Moving blankets are my default plan for now. I'm just wondering if anyone found a crate or storage box that would be good for long term storage. These tailgates aren't cheap.
Break down a refrigerator box and bend it around the tailgate and tape it with packing tape. That way you can move it around or stand it on end as needed.
I use this to help remove, move and reinstall the tailgate. Sometimes I just leave the tailgate on it until I get back. If I store the tailgate it is standing on one end on foam pad leaning against the wall.
It is very handy to install and remove my hitch hauler when needed.
You could make a "crate" out of 2x4's. Your choice if you enclose it with plywood or leave it open. If you got some extra hinge mounts from another similar super duty, you could attach them to this crate in such a way as to be mounted in the crate like it is mounted on your bed.
My tailgate has the built in pull out steps. That is a big struggle to take off and put on by myself. I just lay it down ford emblem up on my workbench. Thinking about rigging up a pulley system to make it easier.
When I get ready to load our truck camper in the much loved 8ft bed : I get the wife to help me remove the tailgate & lay it on the empty trailer in the shop.
