Block heater question? What temp?

At what temperature do you guys start plugging in your trucks? It's been getting cold here and we have had some 10-12dg nights.

This is from the manual…

Note: The heater is most effective when outdoor temperatures are below 0 °F (-18 °C).

Also, three hours is about the most you want to plug it in. In other words, plug in for three hours or 12, it’s not going to get any warmer. Put it on a timer or plug it in a few hours before you need the truck.

If it was convenient I would definitely plug it in at those temps. I use block heaters frequently and I think the benefits well outweigh the cost of operation used on a timer to run a few hours before needing to start the vehicle.

I plug in any time the temps get around 30 degrees. Not because the truck needs it but because it makes defrosting the windshield much faster. I haven't had to scrape frost for 4 years. I have it set on a timer that is set for 4 hours before I leave for work. Coolant temp is around 80 degrees on startup no matter the outside temp.

Yes, there is more to it than... Just the truck starting... Windshield scraping is reduced, Oil getting to parts that need it faster for less wear for internal parts, Less fuel is used because the engine is basically already warm, Heat for the cab sooner...and so on...

Thanks for thr replies. I may look into a wifi plug that I can power up and down from my phone. The truck is parked in a barn so that eliminates frost and windshield scraping etc everything that comes with physically being outside. It's just straight cold, no moister, no wind etc. Cab heating and oil distribution would be the biggest advantage here. But without a way to remote operate the power source I would have to walk all the way to the barn, in said cold, more than once lol.

The block heater element is 1000W. So a 15 amp plug is more than adequate.
