CEL light

22 F250 7.3 25K miles. Stopped at advanced auto parts to have the code scanned. Guy said the engine temp is below spec. Ambient temp is 40F outside.

On the expressway engine temp fluctuates between 178 and 185. Trans is 187. Thermostat opening prematurely? Didn't have this problem last year when it was cold.

We are traveling to Murfreesboro TN. Planning to check the coolant level when we get there. I should have done so at advanced auto, didn't think to.

What code came up on the scan???
Good that you got it scanned , but can't tell much without the code that came up.

Okay, yes, with that code and your reported operating temps, I would say it looks like a bad t-stat.
T-stat opening is 195 I believe and your engine is running cooler than that.

Get yourself an infrared thermometer and verify the temps that your dash/gauges are showing. They're relatively inexpensive at HF and have a ton of uses. I carry one in the truck any time that I'm on a trip.
