This past week I was towing a light travel trailer (Less than 5,000 lbs) from Nevada to Truckee CA. There were a few good grades where the transmission temp hit 224 degrees, and the engine coolant temp hit 218 degrees. 2024 F-250 7.3L gas, outside air temp in the mid to high 70s, elevation ~6,000 feet. Are these normal temps under the circumstances?
Did that gas engine scream and whine and almost red line? Is the reason I bought a diesel. I've hit 230 F going up some steep hills hauling my 5,000 ish pound truck camper up them.

7.3 10 speeds don't do this anywhere close to what the 6.2 6 speeds did.
I have a F250, 6.2, 6 speed, 4:30. I towed a 12 000# 5er over Donner Pass, 7,000+ elevation. I ran it over the pass around 3,500 - 3700 RPM in 3rd gear 50 -55 MPH. My trans was in the low 200s. I'm not in a hurry so I don't race up hills.
On very steep inclines with switchbacks, the speed limit is often 25. One 6 mile section was like that. I ran 25 mph in 2nd gear, no heat issues. In that case, every type truck was stuck at 20 - 25 mph due to the road.
I've hit 242F on my 10R140 in my 2022 F350 7.3/4.30s. Still well within spec for Mercon ULV. I did have my trans filter and 14 or 15 quarts of fluid changed at 37k miles.

No, not at all. Droped to 7th gear now and then. Had one grade that I got stuck behind a line of trucks doing about 45MPH until a spot opened up to pass, and I got my foot into it droped all the way to 5th gear, and I was doing about 75MPH when I pulled back into the slow lane after getting around them, I didn't see what the RPMs were doing as the lanes in that stretch were kind of narrow, it was spinning up though. No drama or screaming, just some nice V8 rumble! I love this engine! that last "Big Block" V8 I had was a Chevy 454 in a "90 one ton pickup, that was a good combo, this is better!
