I figured Tom was ready to fill in that sink hole on 80 in Wharton! LoL. What a mess that is. This trail guide I follow on facebook said that sinkhole is probably an old mine shaft. It would make sense since there is a number of mines in that area that date back to the 1700s. He said Route 31 out near OXford experienced a similar issue a few years back. There was a tunnel that collapsed that was built for the railroads or something. If Steve was still around he may know more about the history of the area. My family and I passed the worksite last night coming back from Rockaway. It is quite the production. Lots of work going on. I would have to guess they know there any anything else that might fail at the same time.

Evening Jersey. So much for warming up! That sinkhole is impressive. they could save a lot of fuel by just dumping trash in it instead of taking it to Williamsport or wherever!

Just an FYI, They seem to making descent progress on the work. Afterall Mount Hope is right up the road for quarry stone and asphalt. There are a number of large piles of crushed stone for the fill. I would have to say several hundred feet long by 2 lanes wide easily. I wonder once they have base figured out and prepped, there is going to a "special" route for the asphalt trucks to get into the space and out. Honestly, it is probably a great spot to have issues if anything. Unless the plant that is on line right now is 45 minutes away. Then it sucks.

another issue is at least one of those mines drops to 2500 feet, where the outshafts run in what direction for how far is a who knows ?? ,so it could again happen,
fill wise you right about the nearby quarry's won't be hard to get the fill, some are very close like just on the west bound side of 80 1 exit away some true 45 mins away,
overall there's a estimated 600 old mines many not known where never mapped over 100 are in morris county alone with the mount hope being the biggest
