I tried to use the vin decoder to see what i actually have with this 79 and it always says not found. Am, I doing something wrong? Any help greatly appreciated.
Consider getting a Marti Report, it will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about your truck.
This is the one on my 1979 that I sold about 10 years ago.
So using the vin off the B pillar safety certification sticker.

Well I hate to fuel the nervousness, but did you get a paper title and did you make sure the paper title vin matches the 2 vin's you found? And FYI those are not the official "vin's". The official vin's are stamped on the frame in 2 places. But most DMV's and cops use the door tag and B pillar sticker due to its easy access.
76 F250 4wd.... and ALL 73-79 F100/F150/F250 4wd's the 1st vin is stamped in the engine compartment, passenger side, top of the frame rail. About in line just past the exhaust manifold collector. And just fwd of the fwd cab mount.
2nd place is passenger side, on top of frame rail, under the cab. HARD to get to and see. Just past the cross member bolt.
A lot of times it is rusted away.
Junk floor pan need replaced? Great time to see it, the white mark down from the arrow is it. I would not worry about it unless the one in the engine compartment had been torched out to swap in a 460 and still using a car exhaust manifold.
When the 1st 3 items vin #'s match you are looking pretty good. But yes the dvr door can get changed easy enough. And that Warranty plate (the plate riveted on the door edge) can be changed also. Does it have hollow middle opening rivets or the style that has the pull to compress the collar center pin? Open center is OEM.
As far as the B pillar "Safety Certification" white sticker, it does NOT come off very easy. Usually it tears or becomes unlaminated and or falls apart when removed. So there is not real way to change one from one cab to another. But Marti Auto does have repops and the OEM rivets. I don't know many people up here in billings mt who have these trucks or parts sources, all the junkyards are stripped to the bone. Do you by chance have any like-minded people up this way who may have some parts to peddle?
My wife spots 73-79 Ford trucks setting in fields faster than I do. And always seems to say "ha did you see that F250 back there, you better turn around and go look at it", it might have some good parts. I have ZERO issues from the wife about spending money on our old Ford trucks and early Broncos.
