Well get busy making new FTE Montana state chapter friends. And count the days, it should not take that many. And see what parts you can locate that might be new by.
Good morning . Can't use pm yet, dont have enough days on the forum.
Tell us more about your truck. What are your plans? Restore...drive n restore....build up the engine?? The wifey n I took an epic 40 day trip to NC and back to Washington in 2023 and we stayed 3 days in Billings. Interesting place.
Does it still have the 400? If so, don't believe all the negative Sh@t about 400's. Sure ..the 460 is a beast but the 400 is no slouch if built up with a slightly bigger cam, Edelbrock intake and 4bbl carb and dual exhaust. New timing chain will help too. How do I know??? Well...I built a 400. Did I win drag races? No. But it was a very stout engine and did everything that I needed it to do. And got 10mpg on the freeway cruising at 70mph to boot. Not too shabby in my opinion.
Yeah I do plan on restoring it while driving when i can, It will be my daily once its finished. It does still have the 400 in it and it runs very strong for its age so i figure i Will start getting the body, diffs and all electrical sorted out and do the motor later. I have heard lots of trash about the 400s but i personally like them. like you said a few tricks here and there and they'll build decent power while still being fair on fuel. None of these trucks are great on fuel at any rate and not really what they are about. I do however want to de-smog using the straight up timing chain trick and am probably going to have to do the rear main sooner than i'd like which could snowball the build in a totally different direction. Billings is a bit of a culture shock to me, I grew up in Butte.

Oh yeah...timing chain swap will help too. Highly recommend it. Glad to hear it's running good for you. Most people post up on how badly it's running for them but you read more and they are usually dealing with someone else's problems or it's not been modified at all and still in stock form.
Yeah when I got it it already had the sp2p edelbrock manifold and decent holley 4 bbl I prefer these engines with a single plane 2 barrel and a holley 550-600 for the reliability. But, all in all a guy cant complain for a running f250 4 wheel drive for 2500 bucks ya know.
If I do however decide to build it I want to go with The 406 Engine build I saw in the stickies on this site, I figure maybe 38 todays money to achieve near 500 ft lbs of torque is very reasonable.
