Hi,
Do you have Forscan? (Scan program to run for codes). If not, it is an excellent program and inexpensive ($15 for annual full license and another $50 or so for their OB2 adapter). It is something you really need if you want to work on these yourself. Did the mechanic scan and did he get any current codes?
No sir, not to me. If the CP4 had been on the verge of failing, you would not have been able to drive it for months AND if the CP4 was not maintaining commanded pressure you would most likely been getting codes.
CP4 is reliant on receiving fuel via the lower pump, but I can't see where CP4 would contribute to the DFCM making noise. Don't you get the noise from the lower pump Key On Engine Off?

The P0087 could also be a pressure sensor or the regulator on the fuel rail and there is also an orifice in the rail which is known to become dislodged. CP4 and / or any of these could cause a P0087, but you aren't getting a code AND they would not cause your DFCM to make noise.
Obviously, it is up to you what you do. The $16k the mechanic quoted is if the CP4 grenades and makes metal, it contaminates everything in the fuel system necessitating replacing everything; pump, injectors, fuel rails etc and cleaning out what isnt replaced, e.g.; fuel tank.

Great points Scott... that mechanic should have done his job as a mechanic and dove deeper than go right to the worst case scenario to make $$$.
I’m dreading this but I am thinking of pulling the regulator from the cp4 and look for metal which I think will once and for all let me know if it is going out
also if it isn’t I should put the disaster prevention kit on to protect me until I can upgrade to the dcr pump
Well the motor craft pump seemed to do the trick!
I also found Spray and Stay lube works great for the threads and o ring I didn’t feel any resistance putting it on
thanks again for all the help!
