I have a 1989 Ford F-150 with a 300-6 4.9L. I have two fuel tanks and when either one is at the 1/4 mark. Almost empty the high pressure fuel pump under the driver side door begins humming and you can feel it on the floor boards. What dose this mean is there a problem with the pumps?

I had this same problem. The problem I had is the fuel pump was on its way to the grave. From what I have found out the type of fuel pump Ford used, on these trucks, makes noise when its about to go out to give you a chance to replacd it before failure.
I was wondering about the noise because the truck has a miss to it when giveing it gas above 1500 RPMS. It seems the truck is cutting out but after you shift and the RPMs are lower it dosen't miss.So is it my Pumps going out.
Only a pressure test or lab scope of the amp draw and coil windings could tell if the pump is week. My 89 300-six has made this noise when the tanks are low for over 70,000 miles so I tend not to do worry about it. I don't press my luck by running noisy, I fuel asap.
