2005 Excursion 4 x 4 checkout

I recently purchased a 2005 Excursion, 6.0 with 4 wheel drive. I know that the system is part time but would like to test it to see if it goes in and out of 4 wheel drive OK. How best to do it? On a straight street with no turning? Thanks in advance.

I'm going to assume you still have the auto front hub lockers. Even if they were replaced with manual the check is pretty much the same except you will physically get out and rotate the hubs to "lock."

****Definitely not pavement****

Find some gravel, grass, loose soil. Put it in neutral. Switch to 4 Hi. Drop into 2nd. Drive it in a straight line. See if you can feel the front engage. Small turns and the front wheels should have some resistance. If you have a friend with you, get them to physically see if the front wheels are pulling. After you confirm they are working, back to neutral. Switch into 4 Low. Back into second. Same process as 4 Hi. I would then check to make sure you can reverse fully and the wheels still engage.

Back in neutral. Switch back to 2wd. Put it in drive. Make sure the transfer case disengages before whizzing away.

If you have access to a lift that would help to see the mechanics and check for wheel spin.

Unless you have lockers you're only going to have two wheels spinning. One in front. One in rear.

You can run it on pavement, just don't do any big turns. You will feel it binding in the steering wheel if you do so don't do that or you might get a loud bang under your butt. But going straight just to test engagement is fine.

I test my junk by using a floor jack on my concrete driveway and lifting the rear tires slightly off the ground (floor jack under the rear pumpkin) then try to slowly move the truck forward. The wheels on the floor jack roll fine over a smooth hard surface ( smooth and hard like concreate, not sure if it'd work on asphalt) . Test out lockers the same way, lift one tire up and see if the truck will move with just one tire one the ground.
