4 wheel drive binding?

I have read several posts refering to a binding noise while operating in 4 wheel drive-Hi, but without any definitive conclusions as to whether this is normal or harmful to the drive system. In the past I have used 4-hi to pull my boat/trailer up the slippery ramp, which works well, but have noticed that once on dry pavement and taking a moderate turn, it sounds like the transfer case is binding. The owners manual leads you to beleive that operating in 4 hi is fine for any conditions. Is this normal?? Since power automatically is transferred to the front wheels under awd, I have now just left it in awd which also works fine.

4 wheel drive binding?

Just about any 4x4 will have the axels fight one another on dry asphalt when full 4x4 is enguaged. Auto 4 wheel drive is different. When the vehicle is in auto 4 wheel drive, only the rear wheels have drive power from the engine on a constant basis. When the rear wheels slip on slick surfaces is when the auto 4 wheel drive kicks in. When the rear wheels break traction, the front wheels kick right in. The front wheels only have power from the engine when the rear wheels slip. Dry asphalt will only allow the rears to work in auto 4 wheel drive. If the vehicle is in 4x4 hi, then the fronts are full time enguaged thus causing the axels to fight one another. Most of the time the axels fight when the front wheels are turned in one direction or another. Food for thought. Jake.
