I had heard not to turn the engine over without having the IP in place. So I had been careful to put the IP in before turning the engine.
This last time I just needed to turn it a little bit so I put it in place and didn't use a nut to hold it in place. I did what I was doing and left the IP in place.
Well, I came back latter and needed to turn the engine over again. Didn't mess with the IP since it was already there. But once I got finished I noticed it had backed out some on me.
I'm not sure if it had back out far enough to not turn the IP when the engine turned.
I have read another post that said the timing won't be affected unless you remove the cover over the IP gear.
Do I need to go in there and check it? Or should it still be OK?
You can rotate the engine all you want with the IP removed as long as you don't remove the 2 bolts holding the IP timing gear housing on the engine. The IP will only go on one way.
Thanks that makes me feel a lots better. However what are the "2 bolts" you are talking about. Looks like the housing is held in place with four bolts.
injector pump timing cover top over the injector pump timing gear is held on by two bolts. if you remove the two bolts and the top of the timing cover, the gear can move causing an out of time issue.

So you are talking about the cover/plate you have to remove to remove the three little bolts that hold the injection pump to the gear? Course that was removed. You can't as far as I know remove the pump without removing it. Looks to be just a plate to cover the access hole. Does it do more than that? If that's the case, can I remove the 'larger cover' with the four bolts to line (or check) the timing marks back up? Or do I need the pull the whole front off?
I've never removed one of the covers. But I have four of these blocks laying around. From what I see there are four bolts holding them on there. Two on each side. That's what's confusing me. Sorry the pictures are so big. I don't know how to make them smaller.
to be honest, i never took one off so never knew there were the bottom bolts making it a 4 bolt mount, i thought it only had the two top bolts.
see that, you taught the old fart something knew today!!
