E40D. Rebuild or replace?

End goal for the truck would be 400-450 hp. I know that the E40D won’t like that, for too long anyway. Now my question is, will I be able to rebuild it to handle that power? Or should I just go with a new unit rated for it. I’ve seen overhaul kits online claiming to handle those numbers, but they seem like a shift kit new clutch’s and etc. I’d think more of the stress would be on shafts and planetary gears drums etc. please correct me if I’m wrong. Open to opinions!

...well some 6.4 guys would swap the 5R110W out when I had mine and toss in the 4R100 (basically same as E4OD) as it shifted faster and easier to build. Talkin BIG power guys.

How confident are you in your abilities as a trans tech? Do you have most/all tools to perform the job?

IMO, grab a core to build after you read the ATSG book at watch vids by Transmission Bench and others similar. Decide if something you could accomplish.

those transmission bench videos are awesome. So detailed! I’m fairly confident I could rebuild it after reading the book and finishing the tbench series. Have the tools, have the shop on weekends. Just want to figure out if rebuilding it with a “performance rebuild” kit would hold the numbers comparably to a remanned built trans with higher end shafts drums and etc. maybe I’m being lazy and just want to do a half day job swapping the trans then a whole rebuild

either way can’t seem to find much online comparing the two, figured someone on here could point me in the right direction

I just built a small ZF this summer for a factory turbo I6 and ran about $450 in parts alone. This included a reman converter that is specific to the unit.

An E4 I bet you would be around $2500 in hardparts pretty quick, with most of that going towards the converter alone. Also, I would see what changed for hard internals to the 4R Diesel (and prob Supercharged) as I swear the OD section was beefier as was another planet. If that holds true, finding a 7.3 SD core to gut for parts may be a good move.

Sort what all you need and want. OD sprial snap ring, billet input, and roller centre support would be the mins for me. I read about something with coast clutch issues, but I forget what exactly happens and how to prevent it.

Hell, I just grabbed myself a core 4L65E (well and LQ9 flattop 6.0) for my Burb to build at my leisure.
