Hi I have a 1990 7.3 idi 2wd 5 speed I’m new to diesel trucks and I know I made a mistake but anyway I put a brand new battery in my truck and sprayed break clean in the intake I know I sprayed too much I’ve tried letting it air out but it still get nothing so my question is what do I do to fix it my problem is when I go to start the truck all I hear is a click noise that’s it I though it my be the starter armature being stuck but I beat on it and didn’t hear it release so now I don’t know what my problem could be any tips will be great help thank you and god bless
welcome to FTE.
only one battery? what condition is the other one in? batteries should really be changed is pairs.
these engines take a lot of power to crank over and start, that is why they come with two batteries.
have you tried bypassing the fender mounted starter relay?
using a screwdriver (with trans in park or neutral) jump from battery side terminal to small terminal. if starter spins, the issue is with neutral savety switch or truck wiring. if not, jump across the two large terminals with a pair of pliars. if starter turns, the relay is bad. if not, starter is bad, or there is a bad connection between battery and relay, or battery and ground.
I have not tried that but I will it was cranking perfectly fine right before that happend I almost had it started . is there any other issues that could have happend that you would know of ? Thanks
Not since you hear the click. The click means your key power is making it to the fender mounting solenoid/relay, so just follow Toms advice and you'll probably....and hopefully, just find the solenoid went out.
Never forget Tom's advice either. This could keep you from becoming stranded one day. Get the click, no turn over, pop the hood, jump the relay, start the truck and drive her home......or keep the truck working.
The relay on the fender is starter relay which gives power to starter solenoid. If you turn key to start, you should hear it clicking rather loud.
If it clicks, but starter won't turn over, pull the plug off of the smaller terminal on the relay and jump that terminal (not the wire you pull) to battery + at the same time measure the voltage on large terminal to starter solenoid or just use a test light. Doing this way you don't need a helper turning key or checking stuff under the hood. No power - bad relay. Have power - check the wire going down to the starter and connection to starter solenoid terminal.
If it won't click, make sure you push the clutch pedal all the way down. If still no go, check the switch by the clutch pedal.
